MudLark: Music

River Between Us

(MudLark)
Katie Henry c2006
River comes down from the mountain with a wildness all her own,
Sometimes flashing pure as starlight, sometimes boiling black as coal.
She carries the poisons we give her through each link in life’s chain,
And the beauty of her constancy can make you feel whole again.
River of beauty runs through all you do
River of secrets, always old, always new,
River of power, river of grace,
River of love washing over your face.

If you give the river poison, it’s like you take a little drink for me,
Take some for yourself, put more on the shelf for each child in the next century.
But if we could step lightly, taking only what we need,
Then the natural cycles of the water of life could wash all our dirty hands clean.
River inside, river in the sand
Sliding through moonlight, slipping through our hands.
Even in the desert she’s still walking toward the sea,
Rippling over rocks and rushing right through you and me.
In the end, river will come crashing down no matter how high you build the dam.
She is always moving. She’s the one who shapes the land,
Skipping over any stone you might put in her way,
And time means nothing to her,
Even time can be worn away.
River of patience, river of need,
River of prayer, river so green,
Her motion is boundless, the ocean’s pull is true.
There’s no separation between the river and you,
There’s no separation between the river and you.
River of words, river of tears,
River of joy, river of years,
River of anger, river alone,
River between us cradles the boat.
River between us cradles the boat.
River between us.
