MudLark: Music
23 Miles Out
(MudLark)
Katie Henry c2000
I cross the road and the leaves come down.
I watch the car pullin’ out toward town,
Left standing here with a sleeping child
And a wildcat prowlin’ ‘round in my yard,
And winter coming on.
This is not country I know.
I rent this house from people up the road,
And everybody ‘round here been here a long, long time.
Me, I’ll be a stranger all of my life,
‘Cause we always move on.
There was a time I sang a wildcat song.
I said there wasn’t a man could ever settle me down,
And when my soul got heavy I wrapped it in velvet cloth.
That was all I had to carry when times got hard,
But that was long ago.
This child of mine is growin’ up strong.
He’s got his daddy’s fire and his mother’s song.
Me, I picked up a few hearts out along the road,
And I carry them with me wherever I go,
Wherever we go.
I cross the road and the leaves come down.
I watch the car pullin’ out toward town,
Left standing here with this hungry child,
And a wildcat heart 23 miles out,
Winter coming on.
